One of the most bizarre films to hit the big screen in 2015 was director Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Lobster. It’s still not quite one of the weirdest films I’ve ever seen (though one of those is definitely Lanthimos’ follow-up, The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017)), but The Lobster filming locations set in the beautifully lush country of Ireland make up for any shortcomings.
The Lobster is set in a parallel universe where single people are given 45 days to find a partner before they are turned into animals. And partners need to have something superficial in common, like a similar affliction or trait. Newly single David, played by Colin Farrell, chooses to become a lobster should he not find a suitable mate, hence the title. Weird? Yes, only slightly. But we like weird here on Almost Ginger. And when you’re throwing in The Lobster movie locations which include beautiful hotels in County Cork and County Kerry and the stunning Irish countryside, it makes for a fantastic viewing experience.
Some scenes also take place in Ireland’s capital city, Dublin, which I’ve visited twice in 2016 and again a year later. I do hope to explore more of Ireland at some point in the future where I’ll definitely check out The Lobster filming locations. In the meantime, here are all the shooting locations listed for you! And I’ve included a map, too.
The Lobster Filming Locations in Ireland
1. Eccles Hotel, Harbour, Reenmeen East, Glengarriff, County Cork, P75 A072
The first filming location we see in The Lobster is the interior of the hotel where all the poor single people go to (hopefully) find a partner. Two hotels were utilised to create the perfect setting in which to host these emotionless single people. Eccles Hotel in County Cork provided most of the interiors of the ‘Hotel’ where David checks into. And the hotel scenes take up the entire first half/one hour of The Lobster.
Looks like quite a nice hotel to stay in, to be honest! You’d probably be able to enjoy it more if you weren’t being threatened with a death sentence of sorts, though.

2. Parknasilla Resort & Spa, Derryquin, Parknasilla, County Kerry, V93 EK71
And the next The Lobster location is the Parknasilla Resort & Spa in County Kerry, a whole county over from the Eccles Hotel. Again, a rather lovely hotel with a nice lake out front. I believe they shot the swimming pool scenes in this hotel, too. So whenever you see characters wandering around outside the hotel, it’s this film location!

3. Dromore Woods, County Clare
Because people who run away and chose to remain single are the absolute worst and fully deserve to be shot and killed, the hotel residents are often forced to go hunting for them. The woods where they go hunting, and ultimately where David ends up running off with The Loners (as they are branded), is Dromore Woods in County Clare.
The woods are just like any old woodland area, except they’re absolutely massive. And there are lots of trails and lakes (one is seen in the film). Standard wood stuff really, and a lot of the film takes place here.

4. Blanchardstown Shopping Centre, Blanchardstown, Dublin 15, D15 XF59
After David joins The Loners, he becomes visibly fond of the Short-sighted woman (who he would match well with, considering he is also visually impaired). Though relationships are forbidden amongst The Loners, they have to pretend to be coupled up when they need to go into “the city”, as it’s known, for supplies.
David and the short-sighted woman (played by Rachel Weiss) go to Blanchardstown Shopping Centre on the outskirts of Dublin.

5. Chimney Park, Hibernian Road, Dublin Docklands, Dublin 2
When The Loners exit the shopping centre, the exterior is Chimney Park, not the Blanchardstown Shopping Centre. It’s a very small park in Dublin Docklands, one of the more modern and indistinguishable parts of the city. Which makes sense, as I think “the city” is supposed to be generic, not anywhere in particular. Chimney Park has palm trees which you don’t normally find in Dublin (or literally anywhere in Ireland) but it definitely heightens the weirdness in The Lobster, not that it needs more oddities.

6. Lazer Lane, Dublin Docklands, Dublin 2
After they leave the shopping centre, The Loners pay a visit to the Loner Leader’s parents house in “the city.” They clearly live in a modern flat and it’s situated on Lazer Lane in Dublin Docklands. It’s literally just around the corner from Chimney Park! The four Loners walk down this street in the dark after the visit, where the Leader praises David on his ability to lie about having a wife and all the things they like to do together.
I imagine this is a pretty expensive area of Dublin to live in! Looks a bit like Dublin’s answer to Canary Wharf in London.

7. Joel’s Restaurant, Naas Rd, Newlands Cross, Dublin 22
The Loner Leader has figured out that the Short-sighted Woman and David are in love. So obviously, the logical way to thwart their chances of happiness is to force the Short-sighted woman to get her eyes removed. Standard.
After this crushing blow, David and the Short-sighted woman escape The Loners and head to a restaurant. Specifically, the modern-looking Joel’s Restaurant on the outskirts of Dublin near a busy road. It looks like the nicest Service Station ever but I’m pretty sure it’s just a fairly fancy restaurant in real life. The green leather booths and tall windows are perfect for this film, the movie locations and aesthetics throughout The Lobster are absolutely spot on.
