Looking back, I’m not really sure why I decided to visit Malta. The weather looked good for January, a balmy 16° to the UK’s drizzly 5° or less. Malta seemed relatively cheap, even the country’s capital Valletta seemed affordable.
Also, season one of Game of Thrones shot the King’s Landing scenes in Malta before production moved to Dubrovnik in Croatia. The opportunity to write about Game of Thrones film locations seemed irresistible!
I’m still making up my mind about Malta. I think I would need to visit Malta again in summer to experience the pristine beaches and of course, Gozo. Malta doesn’t have the colour or charm of Spain and the food isn’t as good as Italy.
But sand down the rough edges (the huge amount of cranes/building sites and the fact that rubbish collection consists of leaving bin bags on the pavement) and Malta can be a very beautiful place to visit.
The churches, deep blue sea and sandstone buildings are particular highlights.
