It’s that time of year again. The time of year where Timehop reminds me how excited I was about working on American Summer Camps a whole 4 years ago now. I still remember I left for camp on Friday June 15th like that date will be embedded in my brain like my birthday or my wedding day or something.
As with every holiday or upcoming occasion, I watched a ton of films and TV shows to get me excited about going to the States. Blue Bloods was getting me excited about going to New York in a I-can’t-even-contain-myself kind of way. As was the weird TV show Beaver Falls, which was about 3 guys from the UK working on an American summer camp.
I also watched many of the below films set on American summer camps before crossing the pond. And even now, I seek them out knowing that even if it’s a crappy film, the nostalgia effect will pull at my heartstrings regardless.
Films Set On American Summer Camps
The Parent Trap (1998)
I’m sure my sister would be very disappointed in me if I didn’t mention The Parent Trap first. It’s an AWESOME film.
Wet Hot American Summer (2001)
Warning: If you think your summer at camp is going to be anything like Wet Hot American Summer, it’s not. And you probably shouldn’t be a camp counsellor.
Addams Family Values (1993)
Ah Wednesday Addams, every weird girl’s heroine for the scene depicted in this still alone.
Moonrise Kingdom (2012)
The camp depicted in Moonrise Kingdom is probably more similar to what kids in the UK might have been subjected to had they been in the Scouts/Guides/Brownies. Except by the looks of things, their sock game is much stronger.
Friday the 13th (1980)
I have never seen Friday the 13th and I don’t want to. But, you know, if that’s your thing then it’s most definitely a movie set on a camp!
Perhaps one of the first proper American summer camp movies, this one stars Bill Murray as a camp counsellor and wouldn’t you just love Bill Murray as your counsellor?
Other camp films: American Pie Presents Band Camp (2005), Camp Nowhere (1994), Ernest Goes to Camp (1987), Heavy Weights (1995), Camp (2003), Space Camp (1986), Indian Summer (1993)
