That’s a Wrap! January on Almost Ginger

I have to say, though an absolute whirlwind of emotion and feeling the lowest of the low, I would be completely misguided if I didn’t say January was a fantastic start to a year. Like, truly fantastic. I’ve gained a truly wonderful significant other. The first few months travel plans have been, erm, planned, watched more films at the cinema than any other month of my life that didn’t include a film festival and spent time with my wonderful family. I guess it just doesn’t get any better than that.

What I’ve been watching

What can I say, I feel like it’s been a triumphant month all round for film! I re-watched all of the Harry Potter films. Though on the same day I finished off The Half Blood Prince and then later found out that Alan Rickman had passed away (*sad face*). I’ve managed to get through the Oscar contenders that have been released so far, too. I know there are some I missed on the big screen, but I’m still planning on viewing in order to make sure I get a full Oscar-view. Brooklyn is absolutely beautiful by the way!

Re-watches: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (2001), Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002), Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004), Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005), Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007), Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince (2009), Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (2010), Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011), Wild (2014), The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013), When Harry Met Sally (1989), Rope (1948)

Screenings: The Danish Girl (2015), The Hateful Eight (2015), Creed (2015), Joy (2015), The Revenant (2015), Room (2015), The Big Short (2015), The Good Dinosaur (2015)

New watches: Steve Jobs (2015), Brooklyn (2015), Blackfish (2013), In The Mood for Love (2000), The Irrational Man (2015)

TV Shows: Catching up on The Middle, Modern Family and The Big Bang Theory as well as watching Blue Bloods, Death in Paradise and being utterly addicted to Tattoo Fixers on Channel Four.

Where I’ve been

Short answer… I’ve not left Manchester!

Not very exciting I know, but it’s been genuinely really nice. I very much needed a break (hence all the films!) and my family have come to see me loads. I finally got to try The Crafty Pig which is a film themed restaurant in Manchester’s famed Northern Quarter and also try the famous Nut Roast at a really cosy bar/pub called The Knott near where I work. So it’s been really nice treat doing things I’ve not done before and seeing my family more than I usually do.

They also came to see me earlier in the month for our 5th Rocky Horror Show performance at Manchester Opera House. We’re big fans, as you can see…

The Rocky Horror Show

My very talented friends who have collaborated to make The 1121 Collective put on a play (their own piece of new writing called A-Bomb on Broadway) for the PUSH theatre festival this month at HOME, a multi-disciplinary arts centre in Manchester which is really quite a big deal. I watched it a couple of weeks ago and it was excellent and I’m so pleased that they got the chance to perform in a venue like that. They will only go from strength to strength!

What I’ve been writing

This has been my most prolific writing month the whole time I’ve been a blogger, which is another reason why I have such a great feeling about this month. If you missed any of my posts, you can catch up on all 13 of them here…

What I’ve been reading

Another short answer again… Practically nothing!

It’s quite bad because this is supposed to be my year where I clean up what books I’ve got left on my shelf at home in order to justify buying any more (roughly 35), but I wasn’t a big reader last year so I think it’s a lot to ask that I suddenly morph into a bookworm. However, it’s not that I don’t like reading, I do very much, it’s just getting into the habit.

However, I have almost caught up on my Total Film magazines which I read religiously to make sure I don’t miss any film news, so that’s a plus! I will be starting back after I’ve fully caught up on The Hundred Year Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson.

Me with Berlinale bear

What’s coming up in February…

I’m going to Berlinale Film Festival!! That’s the N.1 I’m excited about, unsurprisingly! I’ve been before in 2012 but I didn’t get to see as many films as I would have liked and barely any time exploring Berlin so therefore I want to rectify that with this visit. And, this will also mark my first time going to a new country by myself and my first time staying in a hostel, where I wasn’t sharing a dorm with people I knew anyway. So I’m kinda apprehensive but also soooo excited. I’ve also got my very first work trip coming up to the BV Exhibition in London later in the month and I’m also hoping to continue visiting new places around Manchester.

5 Goals for February:

  1. Take more pictures! I want to get much better at my photography this year and that’s only going to happen with practice, so as soon it’s a sunny day I should be out and about.
  2. Keep up the consistent blogging and film viewing, I’m really pleased with how both are going!
  3. Plan and get excited for my trip to Dublin and Game of Thrones locations in March – this one shouldn’t be too hard…
  4. Read more!
  5. Look after myself: Use the awesome Harry Potter colouring book my parents got me for Christmas, eat better, exercise, get lots of sleep and rest, do things that make me happy and generally just treat myself as well as I would my best friend.
