Film Quotes I Live My Life By!

Osgood from Some Like it Hot (1959)

Some Like it Hot has one of my favourite film quotes of all time. Do you have any favourites? |

Let me set the scene if you haven’t seen Some Like it Hot (which is practically sacrilegious by the way). So two musicians wind up witnessing a mob hit, and to hide from the mobsters the men (the brilliant Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis) end up pretending to be women and join an all-female band who are currently touring around the US (Marilyn Monroe just so happens to be a part of that band). It’s a fantastic screwball comedy, with Tony Curtis’ character attempting to woo Marilyn Monroe’s whilst still pretending to be a girl, and Jack Lemmon’s female alter-ego is irresistible to multi millionaire Osgood Fielding III who subsequently asks Lemmon’s woman to marry him.

When Lemmon tries and fails to convinced Osgood that he isn’t the woman he thinks she is… Lemmon gives up, rips of his wig and exclaims his true identity, and Osgood famously replies with the above quote. Because you know what? Nobody is perfect. And this line in the film is hilariously funny, but it works because Osgood is genuinely smitten with ‘Daphne’ and the film plays on the fact that literally nothing is going to stop Osgood loving this person, and isn’t that the way it should be?

Jessie from The Parent Trap (1998)

Who doesn’t love The Parent Trap. This is one of my sister’s favourite films, and in this instance she’s got excellent taste. I don’t know if it’s the transatlantic locations, including the beautiful vineyards of North California, the idea of going to summer camp (I watched this film about twenty times before the summer I was a camp counsellor), the awesome soundtrack, and then you’ve got housekeepers like Jessie living with you that remind your 11-year-old self that growing girls need adventures. And you know what, damn straight they do. Pushing our comfort zone, confronting our fears and just going for it and learning and having an awesome time doing cool new stuff is what life is all about. And you know what else? Grown girls need adventure too!

Mary Poppins from Mary Poppins (1964)

This is a more practical life quote, but totally relevant nonetheless. I’d watched this film and sung this song several times before in my childhood, but it didn’t stick with me as much as it does now. In fact, it only really became a big deal to my way of thinking when I was cleaning by bathroom in third year of University and it was totally awesome because I was singing my heart out to the Rock of Ages musical soundtrack. It turned an otherwise dull task into something I really enjoyed, and I felt accomplished and great about myself. Then the lyric suddenly made sense, and I apply it to every job that worries me or any job I have to do but don’t like, though sometimes it is hard and isn’t always possible.

Alabama from True Romance (1993)

True Romance has one of my favourite film quotes of all time. Do you have any favourites? |

This is a great quote, and I just love it. When Alabama says it in True Romance, she’s talking about the uncertainty and unexplainable occurrence that falling in love is. You can’t plan it, you can’t always explain it, it just happens sometimes and that’s how it is, and I think that’s beautiful in a simple kind of way, and I apply it to other unexplained and troublesome, as well as happy, events that happen sometimes. Sometimes one thing happens, other times other things happen, nothing more and nothing less.

I used to be a person who needed to wrack over things over and over and over in my head, wondering how and why things happened, and what I did wrong, and what I could have done, or this, or that, or blah blah blah. I would never be given that explanation it order to find peace with it. We can’t explain everything all of the time. Things just happen and we need to move on and find closure within ourselves. I don’t think this contradicts karma, or fate, or any other line of reasoning that other people may believe as to why certain things happen. Because, this quote simply embodies the fact that there might be an explanation, and let this fact alone be enough.
